For the first 50 years of its existence, the South African Krugerrand coin was available only as a gold bullion specimen. In 2017, the South African Mint issued its first-ever Silver Krugerrand. The immense popularity of the coin led the mint and the Rand Refinery to offer a new silver bullion Krugerrand annually effective 2018. The 2019 1 oz South African Silver Krugerrand Coins are available now.

The South African Mints first release of the Silver Krugerrand came in 2017 in the midst of the 50th-anniversary celebration of the Gold Krugerrands 1967 debut. These initial Silver Krugerrands were available as Premium Uncirculated coins. Responding to the popularity of the issue, the South African Mint issued the first-ever annual version of the coins in BU condition in 2018.
On the obverse of 2019 South African Silver Krugerrand is the image of Paul Kruger. An influential Boer figure in 19th century South Africa, Kruger served as President of the South African Republic and finished his term in exile in Europe after clashing with Great Britain over South Africas leadership.
The reverse of 2019 1 oz South African Silver Krugerrand Coins includes the image of the national symbol. The Springbok antelope is found throughout the nations of southern Africa, but is particularly common in the wilds of South Africa. Images on both sides of the modern Krugerrand coins were updated in 1984. Otto Schultz created the effigy of Paul Kruger and Coert Steynberg completed work on the Springbok antelope.
All South African Silver Krugerrands are produced by the Rand Refinery and issued by the South African Mint, a privately-owned corporation responsible for coining Rands and other currency for the Republic of South Africa.
