The gorilla is a ground-swelling herbivorous ape that is the largest living primate in the world and has a DNA makeup that is anywhere from 95% to 99% similar to that of human beings. The gorilla is divided into two distinct subspecies, each of which has two recognized subspecies within that branch.
Most of the living gorillas in the world today are found in tropical and subtropical forests of Sub-Saharan Africa. This includes ranges from Central and West African nations through the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Republic of Congo, and the borderlands with Rwanda. Among gorillas, the silverback is the alpha male of the family troop and is responsible for protecting and guiding the family.
The obverse of 2020 1 oz Congo Silver Silverback Gorilla Coins includes a depiction of an aggressive silverback. The silverback gorilla will use various displays of aggression to defend the troop. This includes roars, thumping on its chest, and even short charges at invading gorillas or other apes.

The shield is supported on the sides by large African elephants with a bar supporting their frames that is draped in the ribbon with the national motto.
