Common house cats kept by humans as pets are the only domesticated species within the larger Felidae family. Related to the larger, wild cats such as the cheetah, jaguar, mountain lion, lion, and tiger, cats are often called domestic cats to help separate them in conversation from the larger species of wild cats.
On the obverse of 2021 Fiji Silver Cats Coins is the image of the national coat of arms. Fiji is a small island nation in the South Pacific. Its national seal contains a shield that is quartered and has symbols of Fijian life and culture in each of the quadrants. As a holdover from the period of British control, the shield includes a lion in passant guardant that clutches a cocoa pod in its paws. The shield is supported by native Fijians and there is a canoe with an outrigger attachment above the shield.
The reverse field of 2021 1 oz Silver Cats Coins features a depiction of a cat. In this debut design for the series, the cat is shown in a garden with tall grass in the background and a few flowers growing amidst the grass. Cats may be domesticated, but they still share similar anatomy and characteristics with their wild cousins. This includes a strong, flexible body with quick reflexes, sharp teeth, and retractable claws that it has adapted over time for killing small prey.
