Introduced in 2008 by the Austrian Mint, the coin is one of three metal options in the Austrian Philharmonic bullion series that represents the official bullion series of the Republic of Austria.

The Austrian Philharmonic Series of bullion coins debuted in 1989 with the introduction of the Austrian Gold Philharmonic. That series would carry on for nearly two decades, growing in size and prominence, until 2008 when the Austrian Silver Philharmonic Coin was introduced in 2008. Eight years later, the Austrian Platinum Philharmonic was introduced to round out the series with three of the most preferred precious metals available.

In this design, you will find a cello at the center flanked on either side by two violins. The background field includes a harp, bassoon, and French horn.

While organized orchestral performances are recorded having taken place in Vienna, Austria, as early as the 1830s, todays Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra wouldnt be founded until 1842.
