The platypus is an iconic symbol of Australia that has previously only appeared on platinum bullion coins from the Perth Mint. The unique semiaquatic mammals have numerous distinct capabilities that have developed throughout its evolutionary history. This distinctive symbol of Australia is now present in the Mother & Baby Series. The 2021 2 oz Australian Mother & Baby Platypus Silver Coins is the fourth coin in the series.
Coin Highlights:
The coins in this series boast an authentication feature on the reverse that takes the form of a micro-laser engraved letter hidden within the inscriptions on that side. You can only view it under a magnifying glass.
The 2021 release of the Mother & Baby Platypus Silver Coin is the fourth of the Next Generation Series. There is only one new design per date mark and the focus, as with most Perth Mint programs, is on native animal species. The collection has previously featured the koala, saltwater crocodile, and kookaburra, all animals that are native to the Australian continent.
Queen Elizabeth II features on the obverse side of 2021 Australian Mother & Baby Platypus Silver Coins. This is the definitive sixth-generation portrait of the Queen to feature on Australian coins. Based on Jody Clarks 2015 portrait of the Queen for Royal Mint coins, this design was expanded for Australian coins to include the Queens full neckline and her shoulders. In this right-profile relief, the Queen wears the George IV State Diadem Crown.
A mother platypus is shown swimming through the water with her young hatchling on the reverse field of 2021 2 oz Australian Mother & Baby Platypus Silver Coins. The design showcases the fact that the platypus is the only mammal that lays eggs rather than giving birth to live young.
