First introduced on 3 July 1967 to market South African gold, this legend in the coin industry. The Krugerrand was introduced in South Africa as a gold coin concept, a legal tender linked to the daily price of gold.
The obverse features a portrait of Paul Kruger, the first president of the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek (ZAR). The reverse was originally designed and engraved by the famous sculptor Coert Steynberg and features one of South Africa's national animals, the Springbok.
