The 2025 Krugerrand Tilawa is a special edition Krugerrand one ounce silver coin struck from silver salvaged from the British ocean liner SS Tilawa which was sunk during World War II. These coins were minted by the South African Mint to commemorate the historical event and the recovery of the silver cargo
Features of the 2025 SS Tilawa Silver Krugerrand
Historical Significance: The coins are made from silver bullion originally purchased by the Union of South Africa and lost when the SS Tilawa was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in November 1942.
Unique Design Elements: In addition to the standard Krugerrand design of Paul Kruger on the obverse and a springbok antelope on the reverse, these coins feature a special privy mark. The privy mark includes a detailed engraving of the SS Tilawa and the year "1942".
Purity: Each coin contains one troy ounce of highly pure .999 fine silver.
Limited Availability: This is a limited-edition series, as the number of coins produced is restricted to the amount of silver recovered from the shipwreck in 2017.
