COIN HIGHLIGHTS: On November 20th 1942, and the British passenger liner SS Tilawa chugged out of Mumbai's Ballard Pier, heading for Durban with stops in Mombasa, Dar es Salaam, and Maputo. This 451-foot ship was powered by a coal-fired steam engine and was heavily laden with 732 passengers (families and civilians heading home before their wartime visas expired), 222 crew, four gunners, and a whopping 6,000 tonnes of cargo incl 75 tonnes of pure silver bars from the Bombay Mint, bound for our SA Mint to keep the wartime economy stimulated.
Three days later on November 23rd and a few hundred nautical miles to the Seychelles a Japanese submarine fires torpedoes at the unarmed civilian ship and within minutes the Tilawa sank taking down 280 lives with it incl women and children hence it's been called the "Indian Titanic" for this reason. HMS Birmingham and the SS Carthage swoop in to save 678 survivors, but the wreck vanishes into 6,000 feet of water and lay at the bottom of the ocean for the next 75 years until 2017. A team from Argentum Exploration Ltd uses cutting-edge deep-sea tech to haul up those approx 2400 silver bars.
