The Shiva eye is a beautiful decorated natural spiral trap door operculum from the turbo snail found on the coral reefs in shallow tropical waters. They protect and keep the coral clean. When the snail dies the shiva eye trapdoor remains much the same as a pearl and is used in the making of lovely jewellery. Shiva eye or operculum meaning little lid which serves as a trapdoor to close the opening of the shell when the soft parts of the animal are retracted into the shell. The shape and colour of the Shiva Eye is determined by the diet of the snail and is often round or oval to snugly close the entrance of the shell when the animal is threatened.
