Introduced in about 1771 by the French company Vilmorin, and at one point known as 'American Oak Leaved' Lettuce, it forms a tight cluster of oakleaf- shaped leaves. It is bolt-resistant and bitter-free, longer than many other varieties. This old standard is often undervalued but is a proven performer and essential in the summer lettuce patch. It takes 40 Days to mature. Oakleaf lettuce produces nice, tight rosettes of green, deeply lobed oak leaf shaped leaves. Tender and crisp! It has very good resistance to hot weather and has average water needs.

Lettuce is a fat free, low calorie food and is good for a well balanced diet. It is a valuable source of vitamin A and folic acid. Lactucarium (or “Lettuce Opium”) is a mild opiate-like substance that is contained in all types of lettuce. Both the Romans and Egyptians took advantage of this property eating lettuce at the end of a meal to induce sleep.
