These plants are also mistakenly called Milla, Triteleia and Brodiaea. The easy-to-grow Ipheion produces masses of dainty sky blue, star-shaped blooms. Commonly known as Spring Star Flower it actively grows during winter and goes dormant during summer. Ipheion are ideal for covering banks and may be planted in full sun or in dappled shade in woodland settings. Ipheion uniflorum prefers a sunny or partly shaded position. They are very adaptable. The small bulbs may be planted in virtually any kind of soil as long as it is loosened and kept reasonably well watered in winter and spring. They can also be grown in pots with great success.
Plant the bulbs in autumn just a few centimeters below soil level and about 5-10cm apart. Using a bulb planting tool will help you to plant them at the correct depth. Ipheion are quite frost hardy and are drought resistant although they will respond favorably to good watering. Apart from regular watering and feeding with bulb food in winter and spring, these plants need no attention. When they have become over-crowded after a few years, they can be lifted and replanted to give them more space. If you are going to lift them from the soil when they go dormant it is a good idea to plant them in a Bulb Planter Tray to avoid damage and loss of bulbs. They multiply freely from offsets and seed. Snails and slugs may be a problem; otherwise they are not attacked by any pests. |
