Hyacinthus is a small genus of bulbous sweetly scented flowering plants in the family Asparagaceae. Plants are commonly called hyacinths. The genus is native to the eastern Mediterranean (from south Turkey to northern Israel), north-east Iran, and Turkmenistan. Several types of Brodiaea, Scilla, Ledebouria and other plants that were formerly classified in the lily family and have flower clusters borne along the stalk also have common names with hyacinth in them. Hyacinths should also not be confused with the genus Muscari, which are commonly known as grape hyacinths.

Hyacinths surely have the sweetest scent of any flower. Their range of colours is from dark violet to delft blue, porcelain blue, deep purple to delicate dawn pink and magenta. Pure white is a strong form. In the northern hemisphere, yellow and ruby red are known, but available in limited quantities. They are true bulbs that are winter-growing and summer-dormant when they lose their leaves. From late winter to early spring they will amaze you with the most gorgeous and sweetly scented flowers.

As Hyacinths do not like warm soil, it is not a good idea to plant them next to pathways or in full sun. Hyacinths complement tulips and daffodils especially well. Hyacinths do very well in pots or even hydroponically, grown in glass vases with nothing more but fresh water. It is possible to tell the colours apart by looking at the bulb colour. Pinkish bulbs produce pink flowers, white bulbs, white flowers, and blueish bulbs, blue flowers.
