Calodendrum capense Bonsai Seeds

Cape Chestnut, Wild Chestnut, Wildekastaiing

Calodendrum is a genus of medium-sized evergreen trees comprising two species from Africa. Calodendrum capense, the Cape chestnut, is a well known tree that is widely cultivated, while Calodendrum eickii is a rare forest tree from Tanzania. The botanical name comes from Greek, kalos means beautiful and dendrum means tree. Both species are harvested for their timber in Africa.

Calodendrum capense, beautiful tree from the Cape, the name says it all, it is not only a tree of the Cape, but also a tree of Africa. When in bloom, the whole canopy turns pink. It is a magnificent sight. The bark is used as an ingredient of skin ointments and is sold at traditional medicine markets. Seeds are crushed and boiled to obtain oil that is suitable for making soap. The Xhosa believe that the seeds have magic properties, and hunters used to tie them around their wrists when hunting to bring them skill and good luck.
