SADF 32 Battalion 1st Pattern. Camouflage Beret With Unit Insignia

32 Battalion, also known as the "Buffalo Battalion," was founded by the South African Defence Force (SADF) in 1975 during the South African Border War and the Angolan Civil War. The unit was initially formed from former soldiers of the Portuguese Army's counterinsurgency forces and Angolan FNLA fighters who fled Angola after the MPLA (supported by Cuba and the Soviet Union) took control of the country following independence from Portugal.

Reasons for its founding:

  1. Counterinsurgency Operations:
The SADF needed a highly effective, mobile, and unconventional force to fight against SWAPO (South West Africa Peoples Organization) insurgents operating from Angola into what was then South West Africa (now Namibia).
  2. Expertise and Local Knowledge:
Many of the original recruits had extensive experience in bush warfare and local knowledge of Angola and Namibia, making them valuable assets for operations in the region.
  3. Proxy Warfare:
By using ex-FNLA fighters and Portuguese-trained soldiers, South Africa could conduct military operations in Angola with a degree of deniability and reduced domestic casualties.
  4. Force Multiplication:
32 Battalion became known as an elite unit capable of deep-penetration raids, reconnaissance, and tracking, acting as a force multiplier for the SADF.

In summary:
32 Battalion was founded to leverage the experience of African soldiers in conducting counterinsurgency and cross-border operations in Angola and Namibia on behalf of South Africa during the Cold War. Its creation was driven by strategic, operational, and political needs in the context of regional conflicts and the broader global ideological struggle of the time.

Uniform - Beret

  • The 32 Battalion "First" Pattern often refers to the SAP 1st pattern, as only 32 Battalion officially wore this specific police camouflage on their berets. Later, 32 Battalion adopted its own "Pattern 2," basing it on "Recce wet season" drawings. This pattern features dark brownrusset, and green on a pale green or light brown background.
  • Significance:
  • In a military world of conformity, this unconventional camouflage beret became a badge of honor and a source of myth. For the soldiers known as "Os Terríveis" (The Terrible Ones) or the "Buffalo Battalion," it was more than a uniform. It was a mark of fear and fascination among both allies and adversaries.
