32 Battalion, often referred to as "Buffalo Battalion" or "Os TerrÃveis" (The Terrible Ones), was a light infantry battalion of the South African Army. Formed in 1975, it predominantly comprised black Angolan soldiers, led by white South African officers. The unit is renowned for its combat proficiency during the South African Border War and is often considered one of the most effective units in the history of the South African Defence Force (SADF).
**Origins and Formation:**
The roots of 32 Battalion trace back to the Angolan Civil War. When the Portuguese withdrew from Angola in 1975, many Angolan soldiers, who had previously fought for the Portuguese against Angolan liberation movements, found themselves at risk. The South African military, which was involved in operations in Angola at the time, saw an opportunity to form a new unit from these experienced soldiers. Thus, 32 Battalion was born, with its initial members being these Angolan soldiers and their families.
**Operational Role:**
32 Battalion was primarily a counter-insurgency unit, tasked with conducting operations against SWAPO (South West African People's Organization) guerrillas in Namibia and Angola during the South African Border War. Due to their familiarity with the Angolan terrain and their combat experience, the battalion was highly effective in its operations. They were involved in reconnaissance missions, raids, and conventional warfare, often operating deep within enemy territory.
**Key Operations:**
Throughout its existence, 32 Battalion was involved in numerous operations and skirmishes. One of the most notable was Operation Askari in 1983, where the battalion played a crucial role in combating SWAPO and Angolan forces. Their effectiveness in combat earned them respect from allies and adversaries alike.
