The Kalahari Watermelon is a drought tolerant watermelon; however, watermelon is known to be sweet, but this desert watermelon has a bitter taste, with a subtle watermelon note on aftertaste, with a light green skin and pale-yellow flesh.  It consists of 50% Oil, 35% protein and 5% dietary fibre

Grown for the water content in the flesh during drought to quench thirst, and for the high oil dense seeds, oil is extracting from the seeds.

The seeds can also be ground into a paste and applied to the skin in harsh desert elements and the pulp used as sunblock.

The oil extracted from the seed is liquid at room temperature, light yellow in colour and has a nutty flavour.

The oil is naturally high in linoleic acid, which is critical for cell biology.

The oil can be used in in skin products, and the oil is non-irritant to human skin.

Growing this variety is effortless as they can stand heavy drought like conditions and I haven't noticed disease on my plants.

I grew them vertically on a trellis, but they need a nice strong bag for support (I used the recycled plastic material bags you get from Checker, PicknPay etc.) to hold the weight of the watermelons, just make sure your trellis is strong, so I won't give in with the weight of the watermelon.

These watermelons can grow up to 60cm long and weight up to 10-20kg.
