This is a large, heavy-duty stoneware flagon, often referred to as a whiskey or spirit jar. It features a classic two-tone salt-glaze finish, with a honey-brown glazed shoulder and neck transitioning into a cream-coloured lower body. These vessels were a staple of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, primarily used for storing and transporting bulk liquids like spirits, vinegar, or oils.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

  • MATERIAL: Heavy salt-glazed stoneware.

  • DIMENSIONS: 34cm (height) x 22cm (maximum width).

  • BASE DIAMETER: 16cm.

  • CAPACITY: Given its size, this flagon likely holds approximately 1 to 2 imperial gallons.

  • ERA: Typically produced between 1880 and 1930.

CONDITION

GOOD VINTAGE CONDITION. The flagon is structurally sound and retains its original heavy weight.

  • Lip: There are minor, age-appropriate chips on the lip of the neck.

  • Body: The glaze is well-preserved with a lovely natural sheen. There are some minor surface firing marks and "stilt marks" on the base, which are characteristic of hand-thrown stoneware from this era.

HISTORICAL PROVENANCE

While this specific piece bears no visible makers mark on the base (which is common for utility-grade stoneware), it is characteristic of the durable jars produced by major British potteries such as Doulton & Co. (Lambeth), Pearson & Co., or Price of Bristol. These flagons were designed to be robust enough for industrial transport but have since become highly collectible for rustic farmhouse kitchen decor.
