Q: are the syringe necessary for item to work properly?
A: yes, (syringe is included in the package) if you want to adjust the speed. A syringe is needed to remove the air bubbles or add air. Just follow the instructions and if you need more help, go to YouTube and find a well-explained video regarding how to add/extract air using a syringe, you can calibrate the bubbles to get a better picture.
It doesn't come with instructions and has a little needle. Figured out in the end you must work out the correct amount of air to add (Too little won't hold the sand and too much make the sand stick at the top) and shake it quite a bit to make little bubbles, to hold up the sand, then your sand will drop slowly instead of in large clumps. Bright colours and looks just like the photos.
