DVR record the images from multiple cameras onto a disc drive and allow you to replay any of the sequences at fast speed or slow speed.
You have to fit any size SATA drive to the DVR to allow the storing of images. Any size will do as it loops continuously overwriting the older files. A 250GByte disk will give about 7 days for four cameras recording continuously 24 hours a day before over-writing the oldest data.
If you do not want to record continuously, you can use motion detection or scheduled recordings to limit the amount of info to store on the disk. The DVR stores all the data recorded in its RAM and writes files when the RAM is full, meaning the disk is not active most times. Typically files hold about 30 minutes of information per file.
To operate, you would connect a VGA (computer) monitor to the VGA port which would allow the output of the four camera to be shown continuously in a tiled format allowing you to see all four cameras at the same time. Playback is controlled via a mouse and allows you to search files and playback specific sections of files at normal speed, 2x, 4x and 8x speed, and 1/2, 1/4, and 1/8 speed.
The unit for sale is second hand and we have been using it for the past six months. During this period it enabled us to solve three attempted intrusions just by being able to see what was actually happening when the intruders did not know they were being watched. We have upgraded to a bigger version following this success and are now selling this unit.
If you have cameras at home/office - a DVR makes a huge advance on your security as you are able to find out what exactly happened and prevent it in future.
