 4 Reconnaissance Regiment, a renowned South African Special Forces unit. Established during the tumultuous years of apartheid in 1972, 4 Recce gained a reputation as one of the most skilled and effective special operations forces on the continent. With its origins in the South African Defence Force (SADF), the unit was tasked with conducting covert and unconventional operations both within the country and beyond its borders.

Initially conceived to gather intelligence on potential threats and engage in sabotage, 4 Recce evolved into a formidable combat force known for its versatility and lethal effectiveness. The unit was composed of highly trained and motivated soldiers who excelled in various disciplines such as reconnaissance, combat tracking, demolitions, and covert insertion and extraction techniques. 

4 Recce's operations extended beyond the borders of South Africa during the 1980s, particularly during the conflicts in Angola and Namibia. The end of apartheid brought about significant changes in South Africa's military landscape, leading to the restructuring of its armed forces. 4 Recce underwent transformation as well and became part of the new South African Special Forces Brigade in 1993.
