4 VOC coins (Neder Indie)

4x Neder Indie (VOC) copper ¼ & 1/8 Stuiver of historic interest : 1826 and 1834… in well-used condition

 

Sold as a lot to the highest bidder without reserve.

 

These coins were excavated personally by the seller in 2009 at Newlands House, (Simon Van der Stel’s home in Cape Town) Other VOC coins were discovered in the same swimming pool excavation…..photos of the dig site and National Monuments / archiologist personel on site (who gave permission for the dig and demolition to proceed) are available on request.

 

The site included an old pond / well and aqua-duct and possibly a water wheel building. It is assumed people tossed coins in for good luck….a wishing well? The building showed on contempory maps up to 1880 when it was presumably demolished.
