Waste gas bypass valve bypasses turbine exhaust flow 6. Bypassing the exhaust flow reduces the power to drive the turbine to match the power required for a given boost level. Similar to BOV, the wastegate valve uses boost pressure and spring force to regulate the flow bypassing the turbine 7. The wastegate valve is bolted to the exhaust manifold or header. The advantage of an external wastegate valve is that the bypass flow can be reintroduced into the exhaust flow further downstream of the turbine. This tends to improve turbine performance
