With so much interest in growing bulbs, both in pots and the garden, it is surprising that more are not raised from seed. Many people believe that growing bulbs from seeds is difficult. This is not true, bulbs are easy to grow from seed. It may just take a little longer for the bulbs to start flowering. This makes it all the more rewarding when they do flower because you will have looked after and nurtured the plant from a seed. An idea is to sow bulb seeds every year so that while you are waiting for younger bulbs to grow large enough to flower, others will already be flowering. Growing bulbs from seed is a lot cheaper than buying bulbs, and you will have a lot more plants in the end. Bulbs grown from seed also have a greater variety of flower forms as there is a greater genetic gene pool. Bought bulbs normally come from offset bulbs from a particular plant which means that all the bulbs are “clones” of the original plant. These plants put more of there energy into creating new bulbs than making flowers. So with seed grown bulbs you will have a greater variety and more flowers. Another good benefit from having seed grown bulbs is that they will be more resistant to diseases and pests, and they will be better suited to your own environment having been grown from seed.
