Annona senegalensis, commonly known as African Custard-apple, is a species of flowering plant in the custard apple family, Annonaceae. It is native to Western and Southern Africa, ranging from Senegal to South Africa. A traditional food plant in Africa, its little-known fruits have the potential to improve nutrition, boost food security, foster rural development and support sustainable landcare. Annona senegalensis is a shrub or small tree 2-6 m tall but may reach 11 m under favourable conditions. The genus name, ‘Annona’, is from the Latin word ‘anon’, meaning ‘yearly produce’, referring to the production habits of fruits of the various species in this genus.
