Boscia angustifolia Seeds

Rough-leaved Shepherd; Skurweblaar-witgat

Boscia belongs to the caper family Capparaceae. Pickled capers are made from the unopened buds of European members of this family. The genus consists of about 8 species and was named for Louis Bosc (1759-1828), a French professor of agriculture who lived through the revolution.

Boscia angustifolia is a South African indigenous species from the Limpopo Province. It is commonly known as Rough-leaved Shepherd Tree in English and Skurweblaar-witgat in Afrikaans. It is synonymously known as Boscia corymbosa. It grows into a shrub or small tree. In the wild it is often found growing on termite mounds. It has darkish green spine-tipped leaves. During summer it bears small sweet-smelling cream to yellow flowers which are followed by 1 cm yellow fruits.
