Queen Fabiola is undoubtedly the most eye-catching modern day Brodiaea cultivar in existence. From spring to early summer electric blue flowers are borne on 30cm tall sturdy stems which arise from the underground corms. They are renowned for making excellent cut flowers and great subject in wedding bouquets and will last for 14 days in a vase. They are native to the western parts of North and South America. Queen Fabiola is ideal plants for the perennial rock garden but display just as attractively when planted in large groups in a perennial border. They also do very well in pots too, which adds the benefit of being able to move them indoors during flowering. Just be sure to use pots that have sufficient drainage.

Brodiaea are good for naturalizing woodland settings. Do not bury the corms too deeply. A few centimeters of soil over the corms are fine. Using a bulb planting tool will help you to plant them at the correct depth. They like a sunny position but will also feel at home planted among trees.

Brodiaea tolerate frost and are trouble-free. As long as they are regularly and deeply watered in winter and spring they require very little attention. Bulb food may be watered in at intervals in spring and into early summer, well before dormancy starts. If you are going to lift them from the soil when they go dormant it is a good idea to plant them in a Bulb Planter Tray to avoid damage and loss of bulbs. Good companion plants are Centaurea, Coreopsis, Digitalis, Hemerocallis, Kniphofia, Leucanthemum, Peonies, Rudbeckia, Salvia, Verbascum, Rhododendron, Cotoneaster, Berberis, Acer palmatum, Deutzia gracilis and Weigela.
