Caesalpinia is a genus of flowering plants in the legume family, Fabaceae and subfamily Caesalpinioideae. Another very popular member of the Caesalpinioideae subfamily is Delonix regia, the Flamboyant Tree. The generic name honours the botanist, physician and philosopher Andrea Cesalpino. Membership within the Caesalpinia genus is controversial, with different publications including anywhere from 70 to 165 species, depending largely on the inclusion or exclusion of species alternately listed under genera such as Hoffmannseggia. It contains tropical or subtropical woody plants. Caesalpinia pearsonii commonly known as Namib Plume-Flower in English and Namib-Pronkstert in Afrikaans is an attractive Namibian native. It grows into a shrub of up to 1 meter tall. It has white or grey stems with prickles and small pinnate leaves. It bears pale yellow flowers in racemes. These are followed by pinkish curved to circular pods covered with prickles.
