Eryngium planum Seeds
Flat Sea Holly
Eryngium can be annuals, biennials or perennials with simple or divided leaves, often spiny edged, and cone-like flower-heads often surrounded by an involucre of conspicuous spiny bracts. Eryngiums like a sunny warm location with reasonably fertile and damp, yet never wet soil. Ideal for a border in full sun. Cut back to ground in autumn and avoid planting where foliage will be drowned by surrounding plants.
Eryngium planum, commonly known as flat sea holly, blue eryngo or flat-leaved eryngo is a robust perennial forming a clump of rounded basal leaves; erect, branched stems bear deeply-lobed, blue-tinged, spiny leaves and small, blue, terminal flower-heads with narrow, spiny bracts 2.5cm long in summer and early autumn.
