Habranthus ruber Seeds

Rare Red Rain Lily

Habranthus is a genus in the Amaryllidaceae family with species from Central and South America extending into southern North America. All of them have narrow, linear or strap-shaped leaves. Their flowers are very similar to Zephyranthes and both are called rain lilies because they flower in profusion after a rain shower during summer. Habranthus ruber is a very rare rain lily species from open fields and woodland edges in the southern Brazilian province of Rio Grande do Sul, where it was first described in 1970. The small, rain lily-size, deciduous bulbs sprout 30cm tall spikes each topped with 1-2 large scarlet orange flowers that open outfacing before drooping slightly the second day. Habranthus ruber has the closest to red colour of all members of the genus known for mainly white and pink flowers. Fortunately, it's quite easy to grow in a container.
