Kniphofia caulescens Seeds

Blue-leaf Red Hot Poker

Kniphofia (Red hot poker, Torch lily, Poker plant) is a genus of plants in the family Asphodelaceae that includes 70 or more species native to Africa. Some species have been commercially used for horticultural use and are commonly known for their bright, rocket-shaped flowers. These plants produce spikes of brightly-coloured, hanging, red-to-orange flowers. This gives names such as "torch" and "red hot poker" to many of them. Kniphofia caulescens or Blue-leaf Red Hot Poker, as it is commonly known, adds colour, texture and structure to the garden with its robust rosettes of blue foliage. These uniquely coloured strap-like leaves stand out among their green leafed companions. While this plant is widely adaptable across much of the country, it does especially well in gardens at higher altitudes. Kniphofia caulescens thrives in compost-enriched soils that are well-drained over the winter months (No low spots that collect rain and snow.) To take advantage of its structural foliage, plant it in front of a large green bladed clump of grass for a spectacular display of flowers and foliage. Its high altitude origins make it cold hardy.
