Macledium spinosum Seeds
Spikeflower
Macledium is a genus of flowering plants in the daisy family, Asteraceae. Both Macledium and Dicoma are distributed largely in tropical and southern Africa. Macledium is distinguished from genus Dicoma by a large number of characters relating to morphology and anatomy of phyllaries, corolla, anthers, style, cypsela and testa. The genus contains some 20 species. Macledium spinosum commonly known as Spikeflower is a South African endemic species from the Eastern Cape and Western Cape Provinces. It is synonymously known as Dicoma burmanii, Dicoma diacanthoides, Dicoma spinosa, Helichrysum spinosum, Macledium burmanni or Xeranthemum spinosum. It grows into a shrub of up to 50cm tall with spiny grey-velvety leaves. From spring to summer it bears very attractive pink, white and purple flower heads.
