Nemesia cheiranthus Seeds
Long-eared Nemesia, Shooting Stars; Kappieblommetjie, Weeskindertjies
Nemesia is a genus of annuals, perennials and sub-shrubs which are native to sandy coasts or disturbed ground in South Africa. Numerous hybrids have been selected, and the annual cultivars are popular with gardeners as bedding plants. In temperate regions they are usually treated as half-hardy, grown from seed in heat, and planted out after all danger of frost has passed. The flowers are two-lipped, with the upper lip consisting of four lobes and the lower lip two lobes. Nemesia cheiranthus, commonly known as Long-eared Nemesia or Shooting Stars in English and Kappieblommetjie or Weeskindertjies in Afrikaans, is an annual plant endemic to South Africa, with white and yellow flowers, occasionally with purple markings. The upper petals are long and thin, and there are two typically orange bulbous protuberances on the otherwise yellow lower lip, which may be centrally indented. The leaves are toothed and lance-shaped. It typically grows to 40 cm and is distributed mainly in Namaqualand on sandy soils. It is delightfully scented and bears curious flowers! This intriguing annual blooms over a long period in summer.
