They are drought and heat tolerant, but can tolerate only minor frosts. Some species are extremely popular garden plants, grown as bedding plants in temperate regions. Pelargonium auritum is a South African indigenous species from the Eastern Cape and Western Cape Provinces. It is a 20cm tuberous perennial with hairy variably shaped leaves. It bears intensely dark purple flowers. The petals have white bases. It flowers from spring to summer.
