THIS ITEM IS GRADED XF (EXTREMELY FINE)

  • This is a 1960 South African 5 Shilling coin, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Union of South Africa.
  • History:
  • Union of South Africa:
  • In 1910, the Union of South Africa was formed, uniting the four British colonies of the Cape, Natal, Transvaal, and Orange Free State.
  • Coin Commemoration:
  • The coin you have is a commemorative piece issued in 1960 to mark the 50th anniversary of this union.
  • Design:
  • The coin features the phrase "Eendrag Maak Mag" (Unity is Strength) in Afrikaans and "Unity is Strength" in English. It also depicts the Union Buildings in Pretoria, the administrative capital of South Africa.
  • Decimalization:
  • In 1961, South Africa adopted a decimal currency system, replacing the pound with the rand. This coin, therefore, represents the end of an era in South African currency.
