The shunt regulator operates by maintaining a constant voltage across its terminals and it takes up the surplus current to maintain the voltage across the load.
The ammeter shunt is the device that provides the low resistance path to the flow of current. It connects in parallel with the ammeter. In some of the ammeters, the shunt is inbuilt inside the instrument while in others it is externally connected to the circuit.
