Many of the traditional Christmas lights are fitted with bulbs which generate a lot of heat. Such bulbs, many of which are incandescent and while providing a pleasant looking light, use up a lot of electricity as most of the energy they consume is lost to heat generation rather than light output. String lights are rather cool to the touch as they generate far less heat and are therefore, more energy efficient. In fact, LEDs are thought to be 90% more energy efficient than incandescent lights. Additionally, many of them provide a soft, warm glow which is similar to traditional lights, so the user does not lose out on the aesthetic appeal. The main differences are that LED lights use up much less energy and that they are cool to the touch, making them safer to handle.
