A note for you techies:

Why Green Laser pointers cost significantly more than Red lasers:
A common red laser pointer contains a laser diode notably like a sophisticated light-emitting diode (LED).

Green lasers are much more complicated than standard red laser pointers, because laser diodes are not commonly available in this (green) wavelength range. The green light is generated in an indirect process, beginning with a high-power (typically 250 mW; enough to start a fire) infrared AlGaAs laser diode operating at a wavelength of 808 nm. The 808 nm light pumps a crystal of neodymium-doped vanadate (ND:YVO4)  which lases deeper in the infrared at 1064 nm. The vanadate crystal is coated on the diode side with a dielectric mirror that reflects at 1064 nm and transmits at 808 nm. The crystal is mounted on a copper block, acting as a heatsink; its 1064 nm output is fed into a crystal of potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP), mounted on a heatsink in the laser cavity resonator. The orientation of the crystals must be matched, as they are both anisotropic and the Nd:YVO4 outputs polarized light. This unit acts as a frequency doubler, and halves the wavelength to the desired 532 nm. The resonant cavity is terminated by a dielectric mirror that reflects at 1064 nm and transmits at 532 nm. An infrared filter behind the mirror removes IR radiation from the output beam, and the assembly ends in a collimator lens. The output power of most green laser pointers is on the order of 5 mW. All these internal components drives up costs but you get a highly visible beam many more times brighter than a standard red laser pointer with the same power output.

Some common Q & A:
Q: Is the beam visible at night?
A: Yes. The beam will almost always be visible at night. Shine the beam into the sky and you’ll see an endless shaft of green light.
Q: Can I see the beam outside during the day?
A: No. The green dot will be bright and visible but not the beam. Even the beam from a high power Class IV lasers with many watts of power will hardly visible outside during the day
Q: Does the laser have a pressure switch or an on/off switch
A: It’s a pressure switch. This is because of international CDRH laser standards and safety requirements.
Q: Is the laser radiation dangerous.

A: Laser radiation is another way of saying laser light. Don’t confuse the word radiation with other forms of radiation. ie nuclear, x-ray or gamma radiation. But yes, laser light is dangerous for the eyes if one stares directly into the beam. Looking at the bright spot on a wall from a 5mw laser pointer is not dangerous. Only when a laser reaches powers of 500mw or more does the “spot on a wall” also create a hazard to ones’ eyes.
