The painting shows the 5th Gurkhas advancing uphill in the Kurrum Valley against large odds during their advance to Kabul.


DUE TO THE INCREASINGLY FRIENDLY RELATIONS BETWEEN THE AFGHAN AMIR AND THE RUSSIANS, THE BRITISH INSISTED ON A BRITISH ENVOY IN KABUL THE BRITISH MISSION WAS REFUSED PASSAGE THROUGH THE KHYBER PASS AND IT WAS DECIDED TO RESORT TO FORCE.

THE BRITISH FORCE WAS COMMANDED BY MAJOR-GENERAL SIR FREDERICK ROBERTS. HIS FORCE ADVANCED UP THE KURRAM VALLEY WHERE IT WAS OPPOSED BY A FORCE OF 18,000 AFGHANS. THE TOTAL SIZE OF THE BRITISH FORCE WAS 3200. ROBERTS LED A FORCE OF 1300 MEN ON A RIGHT FLANKING MOVEMENT DURING THE NIGHT. THE FOLLOWING MORNING (2ND DECEMBER 1878) WITH COMPLETE SURPRISE HE DISPERSED THE AFGHANS WHO FLED LEAVING THEIR ARTILLERY BEHIND.

THE BRITTISH LOST 20 KILLED AND 76 WOUNDED. AS A RESULT OF THIS ACTION, ALL BRITISH DEMANDS WERE ACCEPTED INCLUDING A BRITISH ENVOY IN KABUL
