Some history :
Drawing its name from the Greek work for “Intoxication” the Amethyst has a long and colorful history throughout time. Egyptians used them for engraved jewelry, ancient Greeks and Romans thought it prevented intoxication, while medieval Europeans thought it would heal them in battle. Now we appreciate it for its stunning beauty, purple being its main coloration, it can also be found with accents of either blue or red as well. Most suitable for jewelry, the Amethyst draws its purple hues from irradiation and the shade of “perfect” purple often associated with this stone is called “Deep Siberian”; usually a shade of purple with darker blue hues accentuating it. The Amethyst has a rich history which is quite fascinating once you delve into it; the Greeks were quite fond of this gemstone and it crops up in many mythological stories throughout the years. One of the most interesting myths being that Amethyst was stained purple from Dionysus’s tears after Amethystos was transformed into a Quartz statue to protect her from the monstrous tigers that he had created. He mourned for her breathtaking beauty.
Amethyst can be found all over the world, with the biggest deposits located in Brazil, South Africa and Russia; however, it can be found in South Korea, U.S.A., Canada and the highest quality Gems being found in Uruguay.
