Southern Rhodesia became a self-governing colony in 1923. It was incorporated into the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, consisting of Northern Rhodesia, Southern Rhodesia and Nyasaland (now Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi) when it was established in September 1953. The Federation was dissolved at the end of 1963 when Zambia and Malawi gained independence. The capital of the Federation was Salisbury (now Harare). Southern Rhodeisia unilaterally declared independence in 1965, to became the Republic of Rhodesia. Later, in 1980, it became the Republic of Zimbabwe.
