Mourning jewellery celebrates the life of loved ones who are no more. It usually consists of jewellery made from gold and black enamel such as is beautifully exemplified by this brooch. Georgian and Victorian mourning jewellery was a way for the bereaved to outwardly express their grief and devotion to the deceased. Antique mourning jewellery also functioned as a constant reminder of the departed and a symbol of the enduring bond between them and the living. This particular brooch holds a reminder of Mrs E. Hayes, who passed on 3 November 1841, at the tender young age of 31. This lovely mourning brooch was most probably requested by her husband and family as a memento of her life and the love they had for her. Mrs Hayes' hair has been beautifully braided and put on display in a glass holder in the centre of this lovingly created mourning brooch.
