Description: A 19th Century antique wooden Lace Bobbin. Ref. W/10

Maker: English origin

Date: Estimated date 1800-1880

History: In the first half of the nineteenth century lacemakers enjoyed an era of greater prosperity. Good hand-made lace was still comparatively expensive and there was a demand for lace bobbins. However, during the second half of the century, hand-made lace failed to compete against cheaper machine-made lace and the demand for bobbins crashed. Most bobbins were made in a hard wood, often decorated with pewter, brass wire or with inscriptions, although some were turned in bone or ivory but these were for the very wealthy ladies who made lace for themselves more as a hobby. Consequently, most bobbins of the Victorian age were made in the first half of the century. Bobbins were inexpensive, around 5 to 8 pence per dozen but this did not include the spangling with beads which was done by the owner. The glass beads used were usually made by the local blacksmith from scrap glass.
Condition:
 Overall in good condition.

Dimensions: Total length of the bobbin 9 cm, not including the spangling

Price: R150.00
