This spectacular and beautifully decorated Japanese Satsuma ginger jar with gold gilt is in great condition and measures a decent 13cm high on the stand and roughly 11 cm wide. The vase is fashioned in the very sought after Satsuma style and depicts a traditional "Peacock" scene. The detailing is incredible and the wonderful gold gilt detailing has been beautifully applied. Today, it can be divided into two distinct categories: the original plain dark clay early Satsuma made in Satsuma from around 1600, and the elaborately decorated export Satsuma ivory-bodied pieces which began to be produced in the nineteenth century in various Japanese cities. By adapting their gilded poly-chromatic enamel over-glaze designs to appeal to the tastes of western consumers, manufacturers of the latter made Satsuma ware one of the most recognised and profitable export products of the Meiji period."
