Chobi rugs are among the most desired and most popular rugs in the western world particularly in North America. It was originally developed in turkey under the concept of ziegler carpets. The design and weave of chobi became famous all over the world and hence all major carpet manufacturers in Pakistan started developing it.
The word Chobi with its various spelling and transliteration (choobi, choubi, chubi) is an attribution from the word choob with a long vowel of oo as it sounds in book. Choob literally means wood and originally is a Persian word that is used for the same meaning in Urdu as well as some parts of India.
Chobi was developed in Lahore and Weaving centres were set up in the border region of Pakistan and Afghanistan where they were mostly produced for the North American market.
