"Quathlamba! The Zulu name for the Drakensberg - Barrier of Spears!

This is no ordinary book. It is an unique record of one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in Africa, seen in all its splendour through the magic eye of a camera.

One of South Africa's leading exponents of colour phoyography, Malcom Pearse, has decided in this book to put colour behind him, and to go for black & white. And he is right. Inspred, imaginative photography calls for black & white. It was Yousuf Karsh, the great Canadian photographer who once said: "When the colour picture succeeds, nothing is left for the imagination of the viewer. Everything has been thrown at him at once. For me, the subtle implications of black & white still hold greater appeal." Malcolm has produced these mountain portraits with a skill and brilliance that has not yet been equalled! Landscape photography is never easy, but somehow he has managed to capture on film those indefinable qualities that almost make the mountains breathe.

This is a book for everyone, to be treasured, brooded over and enjoyed, for as Geoffrey Winthrop Young so aptly says: " A mountaineer is not only someone who climbs mountains, but anybody who like to read, think or talk about them."
