The Anglo-Boer War was a tragic, fascinating and complex historical event. It saw the end of a century, a reign, a way of life and was in many respects the curtain-raiser to the twentieth century, providing a foretaste of what have become all too familiar horrors over the last hundred years: the mass involvement of civilian populations in war; concentration camps, and guerrilla warfare.
It is now a hundred years since the outbreak of the war and we commemorate with A. Century of Anglo-Boer War Stories an anthology of stories and poetry written by Afrikaners, Englishmen and also black South Africans, who explore the trauma of the time and place from their own varied perspectives.
They probe fascinating aspects of human resilience as revealed in time of war and are diverse, entertaining and moving. But above all, the stories have been selected for the quality of the writing.
