A Circa 1870 set of four Creil et Montereau Pottery Rousseau Pattern Dessert Plates

Printed and over painted with domestic birds within feathered rims picked out in blue, printed marks. An imperfection in the Duck plate kindly view photo.

This pattern was designed in 1866 by Felix Bracquemond and produced under the directions of Francois- Eugine Rousseau whose name was add to the pattern. The Pattern is a transfer print with hand painting over the top and is influenced by Japanese pieces in a style popular in Europe at the time called the Aesthetic movement. Faience is a pottery technique where a terracotta body is covered by a glaze which includes tin oxide to give an opaque ground. The technique was originally used to imitate Chinese porcelain before the secret of the method of masking porcelain was discovered.
