THE DAILY EXPRESS (1900-present) The Daily Express is a national daily United Kingdom middle-market newspaper printed in tabloid format. Published in London, it is the flagship of Express Newspapers, owned by publisher Reach plc. It was first published 122 years ago as a broadsheet in 1900 by Sir Arthur Pearson. The paper rose to become the largest circulation newspaper in the world going from 2 million in the 1930s to 4 million in the 1940s. Its current circulation is a mere fraction of that at 173,372 (as of February 2023). GILES CARTOONS: For fifty years cartoons by Carl Giles in the Express newspapers reflected the state of the nation. It was wartime when Giles joined the Express after a stint as a war artist. At first it was the familiar wartime characters: GIs, Hitler and Mussolini that featured in his thrice weekly cartoons. So, in the peaceful summer of 1945 he had to find a substitute and the Giles family was born. It was the antics of the Giles family (the twins, Vera and Grandma) that particularly caught the imagination of the general public. The first collection of cartoons reproduced from the Express Newspaper between 1943- 1945 sold 140,000 copies. Numbers 2 and 3 in the series followed in 1947 and 1949, and editions thereafter followed annually, until the cartoonists death in 1995. Since that time an annual reproducing Giles cartoons has still appeared in time for Christmas. With more than half a million copies sold each year, later editions of the annual are widely available, but the first ten issues are much more elusive. Carl Giles had a memory for detail and carried out meticulous research for his cartoons which he drew using a variety of media, charcoal, pen, gouache and crayon. He had many fans which included the Royal family to whom he gave several original cartoons.
VALUE GUIDE: The Giles Cartoon Annual No. 1 edition from 1946 in very good condition is selling for £200. The rarest Giles special compilation ever produced is England Smiler, cartoons on a world war two theme, published in Denmark in 1946, one year after the first Giles annual. That is worth around £600, that is if you can find it! A very rare 1952 US forces Giles annual (mint copies of which can fetch upwards of £1000) in good condition is currently selling at £349.
