The story takes place in South Africa, near the town of Knysna. The main characters are Jean (Avery) Mannion and Clifford Turner. Jean inherits a 1,500 acre farm when her husband, Simon, was killed in a car accident. With the help of her brother, John, she eventually emerges from her grief to take more interest in the farm and even acquires some sheep. About that time, five sheep at another farm are killed by a leopard, a very unusual event for that area. Cliff Turner, a zoologist with a budding romantic interest in Jean Mannion, and who had been studying the local leopard population, was shocked and somewhat skeptical. He was also worried about how the locals might react.Among the leopards in the area is a 2 year old jet black cub, still living with its mother. The cub is seriously injured by a trap gun set up by a local farmer. The mother helps the cub survive his wounds, but she eventually forces him out of the den, as she must focus on raising two newborn cubs. The wounded cub finds normal hunting almost impossible because of the nature of his injury. He must turn to easier prey. Cliff Turner then faces the difficult task of adjusting his priorities as a scientist, from observation and study, to pursuit and control.
