The
Bocksbeutel is a type of
wine bottle with the form of a flattened ellipsoid. It is commonly used for wines from Franconia in Germany.
GRUNBERGER: Dr Alfred Baumgartner and his colleagues at The Bergkelder near Stellenbosch developed the original Grünberger in 1953.
It was inspired by the famous German wines from the Rhine Valley, an area rich in romanticism and mythology.
The clearly identifiable rounded shape of our bocksbeutel (shape of bottle) sets Grünberger apart from all other wines.
Grünberger was positioned as the Prince of Wines and with its intense flavours and enchanting aromas it has the unique ability to excite the senses.
END OF AN ERA FOR THE STEIN BLEND IN 2010: The Stein Steen-based blend, of semi-sweet white wine was once upon a time one of South Africas biggest selling wines; in top four, beside Bellingham Johannisberger, Nederburg Stein and Graça. How sad then, to find that this wine once a massive seller in South Africa as evidenced by its top four status 20 years ago is no longer made!
Many families in the 70s when they had the occasional dinner party can distinctly recall that rounded green bocksbeutel sitting on the table. Grünberger Stein was such a rock solid stand-by. It appealed to a range of tastes, it wasnt fancy or pretentious, nor was it trying to be anything other than clean plain drinking.
It goes without saying that they have obviously culled this wine from the range because of its performance on the shelf or lack thereof.
As Bob Dylan sang, times, they are a-changing and with changing times come changing fashions and tastes in wine. Im sorry to see it go.
